Driving Tips

Ten Tips For Passing Your Road Test

  1. Follow the instructions of the examiner. Assume “straight ahead” until the examiner says , “Right” or “Left” ignore an instruction to turn if it is given late . Do not be forced into making an unsafe lane change.
  2. Concentrate on your driving .Do not talk unnecessarily to the examiner.
  3. Drive safely and efficiently .Keep pace with the flow of traffic. For most city Streets, 60km/h is a good speed. For most turns 20km/h is a good speed.
  4. Be very observant. Use your mirrors often and turn your head to make it obvious that you look left and right at all intersections and railway crossings.
  5. Be a smooth operator .Keep a space cushion and slow down well before stops. Also ,be gentle on the accelerator and use carefully controlled hand over hand steering . Keep two hands on the steering wheel; do not palm the wheel with one hand. Remember smoothness is the mark of an expert driver .
  6. Obey traffic signs and signals exactly according to the law. Make full stops. Hold a stop two seconds to give yourself time to look properly and yield the right-of-way. Go slowly at YIELD Signs. Stop for AMBER signal unless unsafe to do so. Make a full stop before turning right on a red light .Watch out for left turns and one- way streets .
  7. Be alert for pedestrians and bicyclists and yield to them . Do not force a pedestrian to break their stride . Give people with no protection plenty of space.
  8. Drive in the right-hand lane as much as possible . Leave the left lane open for passing.
  9. Keep focus on the road ahead, if you make mistake, say nothing and just carry on. Do not let mistakes that are behind you distract you from more important things that lie ahead and demand your full attention . The examiner does not aspect you to be perfect and will not fail for poor parallel park, unless you bump into another vehicle or a post.  You will lose some points if you forget to put the signal on.
  10. Use your own judgement . Do not ask for help in the difficult situation. The purpose of driving test is for you to show the examiner that you can drive reasonably well without help.
